Data Sources

Name Done uses open government data to provide autocomplete for UK postcodes, schools, transport stops, and administrative areas. The following attribution statements are required by the data providers and must be displayed by anyone using data derived from these sources.

If you use the Name Done API to display data in your application, you must include these attributions. You may either display them directly or link to this page (namedone.com/data-sources).

First name and last name data

First name and last name data are compiled from baby name statistics published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), covering birth registrations in England and Wales from 1996 to 2025, with historical top-100 data back to 1904.

Name lists are supplemented with additional given name and family name data from other open sources. The ONS baby names dataset is available from the ONS website.

Title and formal name data

Titles (Mr, Mrs, Dr, Sir, Duke, etc.) are a curated list of approximately 75 common UK personal titles and honorifics, ranked by approximate popularity. Formal names combine titles with surnames, first names, and famous people (e.g. "Mr Jones", "Sir Paul", "Duke of Edinburgh").

  • Surnames and first names: derived from the ONS baby names dataset (see above)
  • Famous people: curated by Name Done, covering historical and contemporary figures from across the British Isles

Postcode data

Postcode coordinates and lookup data are sourced from the ONS Postcode Directory (ONSPD), May 2026.

Northern Ireland postcodes (BT prefix) are excluded from the Name Done postcode dataset. The ONSPD is available from the Open Geography Portal.

Street data

Street names and postcode districts are sourced from OS Open Names, a comprehensive dataset of named roads for Great Britain, July 2026.

Street coordinates are derived from OSGB National Grid references and converted to WGS84. OS Open Names is available from the OS Data Hub.

School data

School names, postcodes, and metadata are sourced from the Department for Education (DfE) Explore Education Statistics service.

School coordinates are derived by matching school postcodes against the ONSPD, and therefore also carry the OS and Royal Mail attribution above.

Transport stops

Railway station and airport data are sourced from the National Public Transport Access Nodes (NaPTAN) dataset, maintained by the Department for Transport.

Administrative areas

Towns and cities, electoral wards, civil parishes, local authorities, and parliamentary constituencies are sourced from the ONS Open Geography Portal.
